The history of Ellendale is as fascinating as it is diverse. The town started as a forest and swamp, situated on the divide between the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay. This swamp once served as the hunting grounds of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe until they were displaced by the Lenape tribe in the Battle Green near Chestnut Ridge, a hill on Ellendale's north side.
The Lenape Trace, a significant Native American trade route, passed through Ellendale, connecting Pocomoke City, Maryland, to Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. As Europeans arrived, the area became a province of fur traders and hunters. In the early 18th century, farming and timbering began to shape the landscape, pushing back the once-dominant swamp that covered the area. The land on which Ellendale now stands was originally deeded in 1740 as "Bennett's Pleasure."
Ellendale's history is also marked by the "Nanticoke Swamp," which served as a refuge for criminals during the 18th century. The boundary dispute between Maryland and Delaware made it difficult to enforce jurisdiction, resulting in the swamp becoming a hiding place for those on the wrong side of the law.
During the American Revolution, the Ellendale Swamp became a refuge for Loyalists, culminating in the 1780 Black Camp Insurrection. This rebellion, led by figures such as Bartholomew Banynum and William Dutton, saw around 400 men form "Associations" or militia companies. The causes of the insurrection ranged from opposing all laws to supporting the King's Laws.
Militia from Kent County ultimately dispersed the insurrectionists, with some being sent to serve in the Continental Army and others indicted for treason. Fortunately, none of the participants faced the gruesome sentences that were customary for treason during that time.
