Welcome to Frederica, a picturesque town nestled in Kent County, Delaware, and proudly served by The Sharma Law Firm, your trusted personal injury attorney located in Dover, Delaware. As we explore the heartwarming history and vibrant present of Frederica, you'll find a community that cherishes its heritage while embracing the future.
The roots of Frederica date back to the 17th century when William Penn granted land to Boneny Bishop in 1681. Originally known as Indian Point and later as Johnny Cake Landing, the town's picturesque location along the Murderkill River became a pivotal point for shipping activities, earning the name Goforth's Landing.
In 1772, Jonathan Emerson surveyed and laid out the town, eventually renaming it Frederica Landing in 1796 at the request of his daughter. The name change was a gesture of respect for the nearby Barratt's Chapel, a significant landmark for Methodism.
Throughout the 19th century, Frederica thrived as a shipping and shipbuilding hub, shipping goods like bacon, beef, corn, wheat flour, and more. The town's prosperity depended on its water connections, as roads were often impassable during that era.
The introduction of the Delaware Railroad in 1857, however, marked a turning point. The town's decline as a major shipping center began as the railroad diverted the transportation of goods away from the river ports. Attempts to secure a railroad connection were unsuccessful, and the last shipyard in Frederica closed around 1890.
By the late 19th century, Frederica's economic landscape diversified, with businesses such as canneries, a hat factory, brush factories, and a cooper. A steamship, operated by the Frederica and Philadelphia Navigation Company, linked the town to Philadelphia.
The 1920s brought road improvements, which included a causeway into Frederica, connecting it more effectively with other towns. Frederica's maritime activity waned, but it remained a steadfast and unchanging community. U.S. Route 113 was later rerouted, bypassing Frederica to the east along what is now Delaware Route 1.
Today, Frederica stands as a testament to its history, retaining its unique charm and character. The town's enduring spirit is evident in its commitment to preserving its heritage while adapting to modern times.
The marshland surrounding the Murderkill River to the south lends Frederica its distinctive character and natural beauty. However, on hot summer days, residents may encounter a strong odor from the marsh. Additionally, certain roads leading south and north out of town may experience flooding during high tides and heavy rains.
Frederica takes immense pride in its historical landmarks, including Barratt Hall, Barratt's Chapel, Bonwell House, Frederica Historic District, and Mordington, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
