A Glimpse into Georgetown's History

Georgetown's story begins with its designation as the second county seat, succeeding Lewes. Lewes, a Dutch colony founded in 1631 on the Delaware Bay, was the first European settlement in Delaware and initially served as the county seat. However, the growing population to the west found Lewes increasingly inconvenient due to the arduous journey over poor roads to conduct county business.

After years of discussion and resolution of border disputes between William Penn's family and Frederick Calvert, the 6th Baron Baltimore, Georgetown emerged as a more central and accessible location for the county seat. On January 29, 1791, the Delaware General Assembly passed a law to centralize the county seat. Land was purchased, a courthouse and jail were constructed, and lots were sold to encourage development.

On May 9, 1791, the commissioners, led by Delaware State Senator George Mitchell, purchased 76 acres for a townsite. Georgetown was thoughtfully designed, with a circle one mile in diameter centered around an original square, which is now listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was named in honor of George Mitchell, the lead commissioner.

Georgetown's new location proved advantageous for administration, and it officially became the Seat of Justice on October 26, 1791. Today, Georgetown remains "sixteen miles from everywhere" in Sussex County, making it a central hub for residents and visitors alike.
