Located in both Kent and Sussex counties, Milford boasts a unique position in Delaware, straddling two counties and offering its residents the best of both worlds. The Kent County portion of Milford is part of the Dover, DE Metropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the Philadelphia-Reading-Camden, PA-NJ-DE-MD Combined Statistical Area. On the other hand, the Sussex County portion falls under the Salisbury, MD-DE Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Milford's Rich History: A Journey through Time

Milford's history is a testament to its resilience and progress. The Kent County side of Milford was first settled in 1680 by Henry Bowan on what was known as the Saw Mill Range. Over a century later, the Reverend Sydenham Thorne played a pivotal role by building a dam across the Mispillion River to generate power for his gristmill and sawmill. Around the same period, Joseph Oliver laid out the city's first streets and plots, marking the beginning of a vibrant community. Milford was officially incorporated on February 5, 1807.

In the 1770s, the shipbuilding industry flourished on the Mispillion River, contributing significantly to the town's prosperity. This industry thrived until World War I, with the highlight being the launch of the four-masted, 174-foot long Albert F. Paul from the William G. Abbott shipyard in 1917. At its peak, Milford had six shipyards operating in the downtown area. However, when the last of the region's giant white oaks was cut in the 1920s, the shipyards began to close. Despite this, the Mispillion-built ships continued to sail for many years. The Albert F. Paul met a historic fate, sinking due to a German torpedo in 1942 while sailing from the Bahamas. Notably, the Vineyard shipyard contributed to both World War I and II efforts by building submarine chasers.

Throughout much of the twentieth century, Milford served as the commercial hub for southern Delaware's expansive agricultural community. The town prospered, and its significance in the region continued to grow.

Milford boasts an illustrious political history, as well. Seven of Delaware's governors have hailed from Milford, including Daniel Rogers, Joseph Haslet, William Tharp, Peter F. Causey, William Burton, William T. Watson, and Ruth Ann Minner. Their contributions have left a lasting legacy in Delaware's political landscape.

A Brave Resilience: Milford's Triumph Over Adversity

Milford's history is not without its share of challenges. On Friday, May 30, 2003, a devastating fire ignited in a second-floor apartment adjacent to Wiley Hardware & Appliance on Walnut Street in the historic downtown area. The fire quickly spread, engulfing seven businesses, a church, and three apartments. It resulted in the destruction of an entire city block in the historic section of town. Over 200 firefighters from various Delaware and Maryland communities rallied to combat the blaze, demonstrating Milford's resilience and sense of community in the face of adversity. Thankfully, there were no casualties, but one civilian and six firefighters sustained injuries during the incident.
