A Glimpse into Bowers' Fascinating Past

Bowers Beach boasts a captivating history that dates back to the late 1600s when it was first settled by Francis Whitwell. Initially named Whitwell's Delight, the land changed hands over the years, becoming Dover Peers under William Frampton's ownership. Following Frampton's passing, the land was acquired by William Bassett. It wasn't until August 16, 1734, that the area along the Delaware Bay, nestled between the St. Jones River and Murderkill River, officially became known as Bowers Beach when it was purchased by John Bowers.

The town's ownership subsequently passed through generations, eventually being acquired by multiple owners in the 19th century. On March 9, 1907, Bowers was formally incorporated, and later in 1962, it was reincorporated as the Town of Bowers.

Bowers Beach thrived as a prominent fishing town along the Delaware Bay during its history, witnessing up to 300 boats gracing its docks at one time. Today, the town draws visitors for its fishing, swimming, birdwatching, kayaking, sailing, and the picturesque Delaware Bay beaches.
