Wyoming's origins are deeply rooted in the region's railroad history. In the mid-19th century, the neighboring town of Camden denied access to the Delaware Railroad, prompting the railroad company to construct a station one mile west of Camden, named West Camden. The community's transformation began in 1865 when Reverend John J. Pierce, who had relocated from the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, laid out plots for new housing. This move attracted several individuals from the Wyoming Valley, leading to the decision to rename the area "Wyoming."
Residents were determined to sever any shared identity with Camden and embrace their newfound home. The community officially adopted the name Wyoming in 1866 and was incorporated into a town in 1869.
Wyoming's historical significance is further underscored by the presence of the Lewis Family Tenant Agricultural Complex, Wyoming Historic District, and Wyoming Railroad Station, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1975, a vote was held to merge Wyoming with the neighboring town of Camden. Although Camden residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of the merger, with 117 votes in favor and 49 against, Wyoming residents rejected the proposal, with 113 votes against and 78 in favor. The measure ultimately failed, highlighting Wyoming's steadfast commitment to preserving its unique identity.
